Snapshot of My Story:
Hi there! Thank you for joining me in reading my blog. I am a recent Miami University graduate where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Middle School Education concentrating in language arts and social studies. I studied abroad through Miami's Luxembourg program in the spring of 2012 where I fell in love with traveling and learning how immersing oneself in a different culture is an incredible learning experience. I lived in Differdange, Luxembourg where we took classes Monday-Friday and traveled on the weekends. I traveled all over Western Europe and even made it to Eastern Europe on a few occasions.
During my time at Miami, I focused my educational experiences in urban areas, mainly in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati. Through the Urban Teaching Cohort, my instructors and fellow classmates discussed issues of poverty, racism, especially institutionalized racism, food injustice, and many more social justice issues that seem to be overlooked. There are many issues our society needs to address in order to truly work towards a world where every voice is heard and understood. I plan to dedicate my life working with those who are seen as invisible and understanding why society has created such a negative stereotype of those less fortunate than others. Rather than maintaining the mindset that I can help them, I believe we should adopt the mindset of we and working with those around us not for them. Therefore, I have decided to combine my love of teaching with my love of traveling by joining the Peace Corps. I am a firm believer in jumping out of your comfort zone to experience the best learning as possible and I believe this next chapter in my life will do just that! My title is TEFL-Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Beginning September 14, 2014, I will reside in Macedonia where I will try my best to learn Macedonian and immerse myself in a new, beautiful culture. I come from a wonderful and supportive family who I love and miss dearly, but they have pushed me every step of the way. My mom, dad, brother, and puppy (Oreo) are my number one fans and I couldn't have asked for a better support system. Although some of my other family members and friends don't fully understand my decision to join the Peace Corps, I listened to their concerns, learned from them, and hope to enlighten them through my journey. Hop on and enjoy the ride :) |
